Ovi Needs Help

As a more-than-casual fan of the Washington Capitals, it has perturbed me for quite some time that GM George McPhee has been unable to secure a frontline center to play with standout winger, Alexander Ovechkin. In fact, George has had nearly two and a half years from the moment Ovi was selected in the draft to get this job accomplished. How could this NOT be his primary focus and top priority? Following last season, Yanic Perrault (for a miniscule salary) and Marc Savard (for a tad bit more) were available. Ovi presently plays with a sub-par, out of position center in Dainus Zubrus, and still manages to produce phenomenal numbers and awesome feats. One can only imagine how amazing Alex would be with a legitimate NHL playmaker. 65-70 goals is not even a stretch. I suppose Georgie has more important things to do, for instance, signing a bad backup goalie to a 2 year contract extension and consistently recalling players from Hershey in the calibur of Jakub Klepis. While I realize many of you could not care less about the Nation's Caps, Ovechkin is the future of this sport, and his steady progression is paramount to the league's success.

1) GM, GM did acquire Swedish stand out Nicholas Backstrom in this past year's draft. He decided to stay in Sweden another year to mature physically and emotionally (he's a very shy person we're told)
2) So far it seems to be paying off as he's having a break out year in the Swedish Elite league. Dominating players much older than he. (Another Forsberg?)
3) Having said that there is no reason that GM GM couldn't have signed Perreault this past summer. He would have been a decent stop gap measure. Savard, despite his current stats, was a bit over paid in our opinion. The Caps were not going to give out a long term deal to him with AO and Semin soon to be due hefty raises.
4) It is scary though to imagine what Ovechkin or even Semin would be doing if they played with even ONE other 1st line player.

I remain dubious regarding Backstrom's future in North America... I actually heard recently that he may NOT come to the NHL, citing "shyness" and "Love of Sweden." If this is the case, McPhee has blown yet another draft...

By the way, "GM GM" is quite amusing... Your pet name for Georgie has me LOLing...

1) We believe Backstrom WILL eventually come to the NHL. GMGM may need to visit him a few more times and convince the shy Swede that North America is where he needs to be. maybe even send AO over there to twist his arm a bit. ; )
2) Agree though that if he doesn't come then GM has screwed up big time. Not when they could have drafted Phil Kessel who despite his cancer issue is IN the NHL now!

1) You are probably correct in your assessment of the caps rainbow.
2) Not sure how well/wise it would be to play the 2 Alex's on one line as both are natural left wings and both are simuilar in styles.
3) While both are talented and can create, they are first and formost snipers in need of a play making center. Something the caps do NOT have
