1) OK, the merits of using Messier aside, where/when/why did this come by? A monthly leadership award?? That has to be one of the more silly reasons for an award we have heard in recent years. The MVP is difficult enough to assess, but to now have to try to figure out what the nebulous term' leadership' means is dam impossible to quantify/qualify.
2) As for making it the Messier Award. We have no problem with that per se, but is he the best leader of all time? He did captain 2 different teams to Cups, but is that the reason? He does have his detractors (Ask a Canuck fan how they feel of his leadership). I'd bet we could easily come up with a list of very deserving folks who the award could have been named after
3) Can a goalie ever win it? You might have some fans of Marty Brodeur or Ollie Kolzig tell you that they are the defacto 'captains' of their respective teams. Also how will it be measured exactly? Maybe getting a Gordie Howe hatrick( goal, assist, fight) might automatically make one the winner? LOL We look forward to seeing who the powers that be deem is the 'best leader'.

I Love the award! Its about time they recognized Moose for all he did for his teams. Who cares what Canuck fans think. Do they think? heheheheh
I agree with faux, its a silly reason to have an award. What's next?
I guess the moose has been sucking some real nhl executive ass lately and well they rewarded him with a reward...shoot, the guy isn't even in the hall of fame yet....the great one, or mario or roy haven't even got a reward named after them...very strange...leadership, like the leagues mvp is impossible to judge.. will it go to the captian of the team with the best record each month..the captian who has scored the most points each month..or will mess just hand the reward out to all his buddies...ugh, silly idea.
1) We were thinking much the same: Will it be give to the captain of the best team each month?
2) Yes, he isn't even in the HOF yet, and stll has an award named after him. Definitly must have a buddy in the NHL leadership. No Gretzky, Orr, Roy or Lemiuex award?
Hey faux, any rumors about Messier leading an alternative life style? To be blunt, I've heard he's really gay. I know he has a couple of illegit kids, but heard he prefers guys. Is this true?
ever watch the documentry the boys on the bus..that whole oilers team of the 80s was a little light in the loafers in my opinion.
never saw that flick, but would be interested to see it now. who else on that team may have been gay? Gretzky seemed a bit of a fag, but he did marry Janet Jones and had offspring, though i guess that doesn't mean anything.
1) At this point we have no definitive evidence about Messier, but like Trotz mentioned we have heard rumblings to that end(pardon the pun)
2) We will follow up and inquire with our sources to see if there is anything concrete we can come up with. We have unEarthed some interesting stuff on other players like Kevin Weekes, so we may have to keep digging further.
i heard glenn anderson was gay..not that it matters, they were the dominent team at the time...i bet the were all hopped up on coke as well....or was that just fuhr.
1) Glen Anderson huh? Agreed, nothing wrong with that, just intersting stuff
shanahan wins the first messier award.... a new york ranger go figure.
Shanny hey...good choice...but not sure how you can actually evaluate that...what is their criteria?
I know for a fact that he is gay. After spending a drunken weekend in his hotel room having sex with him every way imaginable! WOW
not sure if there is a criteria, i think its all moose, and some hockey types, picking and choosing....expect alot of the moose's old buddies, to have their name on that award alot....i bet ryan symth gets it next month..if he is healthy.
