Isle's Trade-Redux!

1) Now that there finally is a real deal to discuss. One that by the way NONE of the other rumor mongers got correct. (Another notch/props to FAUXRUMORS for getting that one nearly 3 weeks before anyone else!)
2) Anyway this is what we're being told are the reason(s) that this deal went down. In addition to the reasons outlined by FAUXRUMORS back in November(that Nolan didn't like Zhitnik's tendency to take bad penalties) we're told that goalie Rick Dipietro had significant influence.
3) As was mentioned this past summer, Rick DiPietro and Isle's owner Charles Wang are very close. In the past this has led to the dismissal of coaches (Laviolette the most notable). It has also led to one of the more silly contracts in NHL/sports history, the 15 year deal Ricky signed(and predicted by FAUXRUMORS) this past September.
4) The story goes that DiPietro has been lobbying the Isles owner(who by all accounts IS the defacto-GM) to get Nolan/Snow to bring up Chris Campoli. Who until this deal was buried in Bridgeport despite having quite a good rookie campaign last year. Additionally, DiPietro's long time buddy from his high school days in New England, Fred Mayer was in a similar situation in Philly. We're told that Ricky proposed this deal to Wang over a game of 1 on 1 in Wang's back yard last month. Mentioning that the Isles would save a ton on their salary cap in the process. Wang got the word to Snow, who knows from experience that Wang's 'requests' are to be followed, or else, and Snow got on the phone busily trying to arrange this deal with new Flyer permanent GM Paul Holmgren
5) Things transpired very quickly after Zhitnik's 4 penalty performance against the Penguins last week. This deal will also allow the isles some flexibility to add payroll/a player at the NHL deadline if they remain in the playoff hunt in 2 months time. We have to say that it is probably a good move by the isles to unload Zhitnik, even if they didn't receive much in return. In the New NHL, payroll is as important as talent level, and both need to be juggled very closely.

I'm gonna hold judgment until I see what the new kid brings to the table. Yes, Alex took some bad penalties, but when he was healthy he added to the PP unit, and was a veteran leader on the team.
I also congratulate the folks here for getting yet another rumored trade correct.

Hey Stacey shove it! When did the ICElanders last win a cup?
That trade still makes no sense to me. Why do the Flyers need an old defenseman who makes so much?
Unless they intend to trade him again themselves?
For your Stacey: 1983 1983 1983!! LOL

nice work by Faux on seeing this one coming. i like the move, we save $$ and get faster and younger on D.

Rangers DO suck. is Weekes starting tomorrow, or do we get to abuse Lundqvist again? what's the over/under on Kozlov goals this time?

As always, I am unconcerned regarding the financial angle on this or any deal... Zhitnik hasn't impressed anyone this year, although he has had quite a decent NHL career... I believe Freddie will make an eventual impact on the Island - this trade may be a wash this year, but I feel the Isles will make out best here in the end...

I truly haven't been aware of the DP-Mayer link, but I trust you Faux... Is this the method in which we can expect future deals to come down? Aren't Yashin and Chara buddies as well? Is the BIG Z coming to the Nassau Coliseum also? We can only hope that Freddie's contract isn't renegotiated for, say, 15 years...

In looking at Zhitnik's play the other night versus the Pens, I actually felt sorry for him... There was a play in the corner where Sid the Kid was literally toying with him... Alexei was totally schooled by a 19 year old boy... Who knows, maybe THAT was the final straw...

The Islanders haven't won a deal in ages..so i figure that this will blow up in their face as well....why the islanders would trade a veteran dman for a pile of pucks like meyers is anyone's guess...well i guess i could try an digest all the baloney about DiPietro running the islanders, and helping wang/snow with roster decisions....but i think this is more economics then anything else...pretty sad when the biggest deal of the year so far is zhitnik for meyer...damn that salary cap.

1) Thanks Murph for the recognition here and on your blog. We have tried to respond several times there, but posts never seem to show up. Some glitches there?
2) Yes, if t a trade was judged after 1 game the isles won the trade. Zhitnik played poorly and the Flyers lost, while the isles shut out the offensively gifted Thrashers
